• artist's statement

Original works on display in the GALLERY depict architectural landmarks and scenic Midwestern landscapes. Each one is inspired by personal experience, having visited these places and been compelled to record them as part of a visual journal. They represent my daily surroundings, images from my past, and places I've encountered during travel excursions.

Each rural and urban setting influences a specific choice of color, medium and composition. The resulting piece conveys a perception unapparent in a postcard or photograph. And capturing a building or landscape preserves its present state, allowing the viewer to concentrate on familiar locations they may routinely overlook.

The PRINTS page is new to the site and displays an on-going series of prints from miniature graphite pencil drawings (measuring approximately 4-1/2" x 7-1/4"). A set of 150 limited edition prints has been produced for each drawing; they are individually signed and numbered by the artist. Visit the NEWS/EVENTS page for pricing and availability.

In the ARCHIVE gallery, you will find a broad range of artwork completed between 1990 and the present. This collection explores several art genres---original etchings, lithographs, monoprints, color pencil, graphite and oil. They are consignment work, past student projects and experimental pieces, designed to inspire current undertakings.

Visit the NEWS/EVENTS page for details on print offerings and upcoming exhibit information.

Janet Carpenter grew up in Bronaugh MO, population 209. She earned a BA in Fine Art from Missouri Southern State College (now Missouri Southern State University), Joplin, in 1993. She then relocated to Kansas City where she has had a home studio in the historic Brookside neighborhood since 1997. Janet shows her work both locally and regionally and has become an active member of the thriving Kansas City creative community.

Janet's art has been featured in many solo and group shows in and around Kansas City. In July of 2003, Janet's drawing, "Western Auto Building - Kansas City MO," was chosen for the 21st Annual River Market Regional Exhibition. The show was juried by Debra Singer, Curator of Contemporary Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Curator for the 2004 Whitney Biennial. In April of 2004, Janet's drawing, "Afloat - Beaver Lake/Rogers AR" was displayed at the Overland Park Convention Center as part of the 2004 Art at the Center Juried Exhibition. The juror was Preston Jackson, professor of sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Janet is also one of over 150 artists featured in the 2004 quarterly edition of American Art Collector Book 2 - CENTRAL edition, published by Alcove Books, Berkeley CA. Alcove Books presents a juried selection of art and craft by region of the country and profiles 150 to 200 artists in each issue.

October 2004 marked Janet's first appearance in the Kansas City Artists Coalition's Open Studios, the city's largest visual art event. Janet was one of over 200 Kansas City artists participating and plans to take part in the next Open Studios scheduled for Fall 2007.
